Best time to visit Florida
As a Florida resident, I can confidently say that it’s a pretty great place to live (and visit) almost any time of the year. I mean, where else are you going to get 250 days of sunshine a year? (Just kidding. Florida is actually ranked 10th of the sunniest states, but you get the point!) However, there are a couple of things you should consider when deciding what time of year is best to visit.
I’ll start with my absolute favorite season in Florida, Spring! I particularly love Spring because the weather in Florida is warm but not too hot, typically ranging from the 60s to 80s. Plus, it’s significantly less humid! This is also when everything starts to bloom and come to life, making it an ideal time of year for any outdoor activities. On the flip side, Florida is also a hotspot for Spring Breakers, so depending on where you’re visiting, be prepared for crowds.
Another great time of year to visit Florida is Winter, as it brings mild temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to 70s and comfortable humidity levels. Plus, it’s usually still warm enough to go to the beach! Of course, winter also brings the crowds, as there are always a lot of great holiday events going on at the theme parks. Plus, this is also the time of year when the “snowbirds” start flocking to Florida.
If you’re looking for the best time to visit Florida when it’s not flooding with tourists, Fall is it! However, it’s still pretty warm this time of year, with temperatures in the 80s and hurricane season in full swing, so just take that into consideration. Otherwise, this is a great time to visit if you’re seeking a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds and lower prices at the theme parks or Florida beaches.
Now, onto (the endless) summer, when it’s truly unbearable being outside, with temperatures often exceeding 90 degrees. Plus, the humidity is off the charts! However, we do have extended daylight hours for more activities, and the ocean is really warm (almost like bath water, haha), making it ideal for swimming and water sports. If you are planning on visiting during summer, make sure to pack your sunscreen and your rain jacket, as you’re likely to experience frequent afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms.
Florida packing tips & tricks

- Check the weather. This might sound like a no-brainer, but before you start packing, make sure to check the weather forecast for your Florida vacation destination. The weather in Florida can be all over the place, so knowing what to expect will allow you to pack accordingly and be prepared for any adventure.
- Keep it casual. Depending on where you’re visiting, Florida is a pretty low-key state, so there’s no need to pack your prom dresses and stilettos, ladies, unless you’re going to Miami, of course (haha)! I recommend mainly packing versatile casual outfits that you’ll be comfortable in all day (even with the sun shining and humidity cranking) and can easily be dressed up or down for any adventure.
- Opt for bright colors. When it comes to fashion in Florida, I really feel like anything goes (haha). Year-round, you’ll see many bold, tropical prints and lively hues like coral, turquoise, and yellow. Honestly, the brighter, the better! This is not only a reflection of the fun, upbeat vibe of the state, but brighter colors also help you stay cool by reflecting the sunlight.
- Comfort is key. Given the heat and humidity in Florida, it’s essential to pack light, breathable clothing like linen and cotton. This will help you stay cool and comfortable, whether you’re running errands, heading to the beach, or even going out for a casual dinner. Opting for moisture-wicking fabrics during the day is particularly beneficial, as they prevent you from feeling overheated or sticky.
- Layer up. While it’s generally warm in Florida year-round, we sure do love our air conditioning. Indoor spaces like restaurants and malls can be quite chilly, so don’t forget to pack a few light layers, like a cardigan or jean jacket, just in case.
- There’s no such thing as too much sunscreen. The sun in Florida is no joke, so it’s crucial to pack your sunscreen (and a little extra, just in case). Depending on your planned activities, consider bringing a straw hat, a sunshirt, and sunglasses for additional protection. A sunburn can quickly ruin your vacation, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Be prepared for rain. Afternoon showers are pretty standard in Florida, especially in summer, so don’t forget to add a rain jacket or umbrella to your Florida trip packing list. The good news is that most thunderstorms are over within the hour, so I wouldn’t fret too much if rain is in the forecast.
- Utilize packing organization products. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that packing cubes are my jam (check out this post). They not only help you pack more efficiently but also keep you organized by making it easier to find what you’re looking for. They also make unpacking so much easier and will even help keep your clothes wrinkle-free. Click here to check out some of my other favorite travel essentials.
- Rent your clothes. Whenever I’m headed on vacation, I always like to rent a few unique items I don’t already own to freshen up my travel wardrobe. Nuuly has been my go-to for the past year (especially for any events I have planned) and has everything from cute tops and fun skirts to vacation dresses for every occasion and so much more. Key things to bring on vacation in Florida
Clothing
- Swimsuits & coverups that you can wear at the beach, pool, or water parks. One-piece swimsuits are especially great for theme parks, as they’re more secure for water rides, provide better support for activities, and offer additional sun protection. Some of my favorite places to shop for swim are Aerie, Dippin’ Daisy’s, Monday Swimwear, and Summersalt.
- T-shirts & tanks you can mix and match with a variety of outfits and wear for any adventure. Not only are they great for layering, but they’re also easy to wash and take up minimal space in your luggage. My absolute favorite place to shop for basics is Abercrombie, as they’re great quality and also affordable.
- Flowy tops that are easy and breezy and will keep you cool and comfortable in hot weather. Tops with more of a relaxed fit are great for summer because they provide better ventilation and more coverage to protect you from the sun. Plus, they’re really easy to pair with a variety of outfits.
- Shorts and skirts made of lightweight, breathable materials like cotton or linen that you can wear with a variety of outfits. I typically don’t like to wear denim, as it’s not super comfortable to walk in all day, and it’s heavy. Trouser shorts are a great alternative that are easy to dress up or down!
- Lightweight, flowy dresses, like these from Abercrombie, that you can dress down for daytime activities, like the beach, and dress up for dinner and drinks. I also love packing maxi dresses for vacation, as they’re really comfortable and super easy to style.
- Two piece sets that you can mix and match to create a variety of outfit options. I personally love packing two-piece sets because they’re super versatile, extremely comfortable, and really easy to pack. I’m especially loving all the new printed sets on Amazon right now.
- Jumpsuits & rompers that can easily be dressed down with sandals for daytime activities and dressed up with heels for a night out. Not only are they comfortable and easy to move around in, but they’re simple to style since you don’t have to worry about coordinating tops and bottoms. Plus, they’re easy to pack!
- Activewear that is lightweight, breathable, and made of moisture-wicking fabrics. If you’re planning on spending a lot of time outside, this is one thing I approve of overpacking (haha)! Tennis dresses are great to wear when you want to be comfortable but still look cute. We sure do love our “athleisure” in the Sunshine State, so you’ll catch a lot of Floridians in matching workout sets around town, too!
- Lightweight layers you’ll be comfortable in, even as the temperature fluctuates. Button-up shirts are great to pack because they’re great to layer over a tank or t-shirt, can easily be dressed up or down, and provide some sun protection. I also recommend bringing a lightweight cardigan or cropped trench coat to throw on if you get cold.
Shoes & accessories
- Flip-flops are essential for beach days, poolside lounging, and casual outings. They are easy to slip on and off and comfortable enough for walking short distances. Regardless of where I travel, I always bring a pair to wear in and around the hotel (hotel carpet gives me the creeps, haha). Plus, they’re really easy to pack!
- Sandals are another must-have for your packing list for Florida vacation. I recommend packing a water-friendly pair, like these Reef Water Vista sandals, to wear to the beach, pool, or theme parks. I would also bring a dressy pair of sandals for dining out or any events that might not be as casual.
- Comfortable sneakers are key if you plan on going to the theme parks or doing outdoor activities requiring a lot of walking. Depending on what you have planned, I love these Adidas Sambas because they’re super comfortable and look cute with both activewear and casual vacation outfits, including dresses.
- Wedges or heels if you have any more formal activities planned. However, I honestly wouldn’t recommend packing heels unless you absolutely need them. Opt for dressy sandals or wedges instead, as they’re more comfortable, easier to walk in, and can be paired with a variety of outfits.
- Beach bag if you’re planning on spending some time at the beach or pool. Some basic beach items you’ll want to pack in your beach bag are sunglasses, sunscreen, a towel, a book, a water bottle, and snacks. I’m also sharing a bunch of other things to pack for the beach below, so keep scrolling!
- Backpack for exploring or any daytime activities planned. I love this mini backpack from Fjallraven Kanken. It’s water-resistant and easy to clean, lightweight and comfortable, and holds quite a bit. It’s big enough to hold all the essentials, plus a full-size water bottle and anything I might need for our dog, Melvin.
- Small crossbody bag or belt bag is a must-have for theme parks, offering comfort, versatility, and the freedom to keep your hands free. Moreover, depending on the size, you can usually wear them on most rides without the need to store them in a locker, unlike larger bags. This is my all-time favorite belt bag from Lululemon.
- Straw hat for additional sun protection. My all-time favorite straw hat is from Brixton. It has a wide brim for extra coverage, and it fits amazing. PACKING TIP: If you plan on packing a straw hat in your suitcase, make sure to stuff the inside with clothes and layer clothes around it for extra support. You can also clip your hat onto your carry-on bag if you prefer not to pack it in your suitcase

What to pack for a Florida vacation in "winter"
Contrary to popular belief, Florida can get quite chilly, especially in the northern parts, during what we call “winter”. So, if you’re planning a visit during this time, it’s important to be prepared. Here are a few items to add to your packing list for Florida trip, ensuring you’re ready for the unpredictable weather.
When packing, it’s ideal to bring versatile clothing suitable for layering. Include lightweight sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and a medium-weight jacket for cooler mornings and evenings. Since temperatures tend to rise during the day, also pack short-sleeved shirts, lightweight pants, and comfortable shorts. Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit, as most resorts have heated pools and daytime temperatures are often warm enough for a beach visit.
Sun protection is crucial in Florida, even in winter. If you’re planning on spending time outdoors, whether at the theme parks, beaches, or natural parks, remember to pack sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen. I would also recommend carrying a refillable water bottle with you anywhere you go to stay hydrated.
