Nestled in the heart of California’s Central Coast is Paso Robles, a captivating destination that combines rustic charm, exquisite wines, and breathtaking landscapes. With its rolling vineyards, idyllic countryside, and vibrant downtown, this hidden gem has become a must-visit location for those seeking adventure, relaxation, and diverse wine varietals.
This was our first time visiting Paso Robles and also the fourth stop on our California road trip (check out my other California posts here), and was the perfect place to kick off our wine tasting adventure!

Best time to visit Paso Robles
The weather in Paso Robles is favorable year-round, so there really isn’t a bad time to visit! However, if it were up to me, I would choose to go in Spring, as it marks the beginning of harvest season, boasts mild temperatures (60s-70s), and comes alive with vibrant wildflowers everywhere (the hills are alive, for real, haha).
Fall is another great time of year to visit, as the temperatures are still warm, and the vineyards start to display stunning autumn colors. Harvest season also typically occurs this time of year, providing a unique experience for wine enthusiasts.
Summer is considered the peak tourist season in Paso Robles, with warm to hot temperatures often reaching the high 80s and 90s. This is the prime time for outdoor events and festivals and the busiest season for wine tasting.
How to get to Paso Robles
Depending on your starting location, there are several ways to get to Paso Robles! The closest Paso Robles airport is San Luis Obispo County Regional, about an hour’s drive from Paso Robles. (Click here for the best rates on airline tickets through WayAway.)
If you prefer driving, Paso Robles is about a 3 to 4-hour drive from San Francisco on US-101 South and the same distance from Los Angeles on US-101 North. Paso Robles also has many RV parks and campgrounds for those road tripping in an RV or campervan.
How to get around Paso Robles
The most convenient way to get around Paso Robles is by car. If you plan to check out some of the local attractions and scenic spots around Paso Robles, I always recommend renting a car, as this gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore on your own schedule. However, if you’re not planning on bringing a car, there are many wine tours available here that can still take you to the numerous wineries around Paso Robles. VRBO Paso Robles & Airbnb Paso Robles
We visited with another couple (and their dog), so we opted for a pet friendly VRBO Paso Robles and absolutely loved it. It could not have been in a more perfect location! We were right across the street from Paso Market Walk and less than a mile from Downtown Paso Robles and all the action.
It was also the perfect size! There were two bedrooms and bathrooms, and the living area had an open floor plan with a dining table and a fully equipped kitchen. It was definitely spacious enough for the four of us (and a dog) and would also be a great option for a family!

Paso Robles wineries
Paso Robles has rightfully earned its reputation as one of California’s premier wine regions and is known for producing a wide variety of wines due to its diverse microclimates and soil types.
It has everything from bold and robust reds to crisp and refreshing whites, with its most prominent grape varieties being Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Rhône-style varietals like Grenache and Mourvèdre.
Paso Robles is also home to a myriad of wineries, each offering its unique charm and ambiance. From boutique family-owned estates to grand and architecturally stunning wineries, there is something to cater to every preference.
We were only there for a long weekend, so unfortunately, we only made it to a few wineries Paso Robles, but we really enjoyed the breathtaking views, exceptional wines, and warm hospitality. It truly is a wine lover’s paradise! Below are a couple of the best Paso Robles wineries!

Hoyt Family Vineyards was the first winery that we visited and was such a fun way to kick off our Paso Robles wine tasting adventure. Rava Wines is located in the heart of Paso Robles wine country (about 15 mins from downtown) and was probably my favorite Paso Robles winery. They specialize in producing a range of sparkling and still wines in their onsite vineyard, and their estate is absolutely beautiful. They also have an amazing pet-friendly patio and modern tasting room to enjoy your wine tasting Paso Robles, and a delicious food menu. Would definitely recommend the charcuterie board!
Folktale Winery & Vineyards is not actually located in Paso Robles (it’s in Carmel-By-The-Sea), but it was probably the most magical brunch spot I’ve ever been to. With its stunning French-inspired estate, idyllic wine garden, and beautifully landscaped gardens, I truly felt like I was in a fairy tale. They also had a fantastic brunch menu. The crab benedict was my favorite! If you’re headed back to Napa, you definitely need to stop here on the way!

Justin Vineyards and Winery is one of the region’s most well-known and esteemed wineries. It specializes in Bordeaux-style blends and is particularly recognized for its flagship wine, Isosceles. Justin Winery features a stunning tasting room, beautiful vineyard views, and a restaurant, making it a must-visit destination.
J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines is a prominent name in the Paso Robles wine scene. With vineyards located in both Paso Robles and the nearby Arroyo Seco region, J. Lohr produces a wide range of varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot. The winery offers tastings, tours, and educational experiences for visitors.

Tin City, located on the east side of Paso Robles, was once an industrial area filled with tin-clad buildings that have been transformed into a bustling community of boutique wineries, craft breweries, cideries, distilleries, and specialty food producers. This vibrant and eclectic destination has become a dynamic part of Paso Robles and is a must-see if you visit, as there truly is something there for everyone! Below are some of our favorite spots.
- Tin City Cider Co. is a popular destination for cider enthusiasts. They craft a diverse range of ciders using locally sourced apples, offering a unique twist on this refreshing beverage. Their tasting room provides a laid-back atmosphere where you can sample their ciders and learn about the cider-making process.
BarrelHouse Brewing Co is a beloved craft brewery known for its innovative and flavorful beers. They have a spacious and inviting taproom where you can enjoy their selection of craft brews, including IPAs, stouts, and barrel-aged specialties. Their outdoor beer garden is a great place to relax and soak in the lively atmosphere of Tin City.
Tin City Distillery is a small-batch distillery that specializes in producing handcrafted spirits. They offer a range of spirits, including vodka, gin, and whiskey, all made with careful attention to detail and a commitment to quality. You can visit their tasting room to sample their spirits and learn about the distillation process.
Field Recordings Wine is a winery known for its unique and eclectic approach to winemaking. They produce various wines, including traditional varietals and innovative blends. Their tasting room provides an intimate and welcoming setting to discover their distinctive wines.
- La Perdignus is sourced from local vineyards along the Central Coast and produces small batches of reds and whites that are young, fresh, and vibrant. Their tasting experience includes a mix of current wine selections at their indoor tasting room, or you can grab a bottle to enjoy on their beautiful outdoor patio while soaking in the amazing California weather!
- Etto Pastificio is a family-owned Italian market that brings the best of pasta to California (and to your belly, hehe). They source quality local ingredients and use the latest Italian craft pasta equipment, technique, and style. Before we left Tin City, we grabbed a bunch of stuff (like $200 worth, haha) and had a delicious Italian feast on the patio of our Airbnb one night. Worth every penny!

- Check out one of Paso Robles hot springs. Paso Robles sits atop a geothermal hot spot, making it one of the few places in California where natural hot springs are prevalent. This offers visitors the opportunity to unwind in warm, mineral-rich waters that provide therapeutic benefits and a unique and relaxing experience. Some popular options include Franklin Hot Springs and River Oaks Hot Springs Spa.
- Go on a hike! Below are some of the best restaurants in Paso Robles, as well as some of our favorite bars!
- 1122 is located on the back patio of Pappy McGregor’s downtown and is a 1930’s inspired speakeasy & cocktail lounge serving up a truly unique cocktail experience. This is the perfect place to take a break from wine tasting and enjoy libations in an intimate Great Gatsbyesque atmosphere. I would highly recommend making a reservation in advance here, and please keep in mind that it is a cell phone-free environment.
- Pappy McGregor’s is in the heart of downtown Paso Robles and specializes in high-end pub fare and seasonal craft cocktails. If you’ve been out wine tasting all day and are on the hunt for some delicious comfort food to bring you back to life, this is your place! The pub steak & shrooms were bomb!
- Finca Paso Robles was right down the street from our Airbnb and is the cutest casual Mexican restaurant specializing in wood-grilled seafood and carne asada. This is a great place to taste some of the area’s fresh local ingredients and enjoy a glass of wine on their relaxing fire-lit patio.
- Della’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Cocktails is a downtown Paso Robles restaurant and gin point serving up ingredient-driven rustic dishes and California cocktails in a swanky-casual atmosphere. Wood-fired pizzas are their go-to, but they have a lot of other great savory entrees and sides, including steak, pasta, and more!
- The Hatch Rotisserie & Bar is a popular spot for comfort food lovers. Specializing in rotisserie chicken, the restaurant offers a variety of flavorful dishes, including sandwiches, salads, and sides. Enjoy a relaxed and casual dining experience while indulging in their signature roasted chicken.
