Things to know before you go

Where is Capri, Italy?
Capri is a picturesque island located in southern Italy, just off the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s part of the Campania region and is situated near the Gulf of Naples, making it easily accessible by ferry or boat from cities like Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast.
Famous for its dramatic cliffs, sparkling turquoise waters, and postcard-perfect villages, Capri is a dream destination that effortlessly blends natural beauty with a touch of luxury. See the Capri Italy map below for reference!
How to get to Capri
Getting to Capri is an adventure in itself, as this stunning island is only accessible by boat. Most travelers start their journey in Naples, Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast, where ferries and hydrofoils run regularly to Marina Grande, the port in Capri.
Depending on where you’re coming from and the type of ferry you’re on, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes (from Sorrento) up to 90 minutes if you’re traveling from Naples or the Amalfi Coast to Capri. I HIGHLY recommend booking ferry tickets in advance here, especially if you’re traveling during peak season.
Once you arrive at Marina Grande, you’ll need to take the funicular, a taxi, a bus, or private transportation to reach Capri Town or Anacapri. If you’re traveling with a lot of baggage, it’s probably easiest to take a taxi or check with your hotel to see if they offer complimentary transportation, like Orsa Maggiore, where we stayed.
How to get around Capri
Getting around Capri is relatively easy, though it can be a bit of a challenge due to the island’s steep terrain and narrow roads. The Capri funicular is one of the most popular ways to get around, connecting Marina Grande to the Piazzetta. The ride is quick, scenic, and affordable, making it a great option for those arriving by ferry. However, it can get crowded during peak season, so be prepared for long lines.
If you’re planning on traveling from Capri Town to Anacapri (or vice versa), taking the bus is the most affordable option. However, be prepared for potential delays and long lines, as the buses are pretty small, typically seating only about 10 passengers. For a more comfortable ride, I personally recommend taking a taxi instead. While it’s more expensive, it’s a fun way to experience the island, especially since the taxis in Capri are stylish convertibles.
For a more luxurious journey, you can’t go wrong with private transportation, as it offers the flexibility to customize your itinerary and explore the island at your own pace. While it’s the priciest option, the added convenience and comfort make it well worth the cost, allowing you to enjoy the island without the hassle of crowds.
Lastly, I always recommend walking (if you can), as it’s one of the best ways to explore the island and discover hidden gems along the way. While some of the paths are steep and can be challenging, the views make it well worth it. Plus, it’s a great way to get some steps in and burn off some of the delicious food you’ll likely be indulging in during your visit.
Best time to visit Capri
Deciding when to visit Capri really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. However, if you dream of that perfect blend of sunny skies, fewer crowds, and a touch of dolce vita, late spring and early fall are the sweet spots.
From May to early June, the island starts to wake up with warm temperatures, blooming flowers, and a relaxed atmosphere, making it the perfect time to visit before the summer rush hits. September to early November are also great times to visit, as the crowds begin to thin out, but the weather in Capri is still pleasant.
July and August are undoubtedly the high season, with luxury yachts dotting the turquoise waters, designer boutiques lining the charming streets, and beach clubs buzzing with sun-seekers sipping Aperol spritzes. However, while the energy is at its peak, so are the tourists (especially day-trippers from Naples and the Amalfi Coast) AND prices.
Winter in Capri offers an entirely different experience compared to the bustling summer months. The Island is quiet, with most tourist attractions, hotels, and restaurants closed for the season. While the Capri weather is mild, it’s often too chilly for swimming, and ferry schedules may be reduced. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend visiting this time of year.
Tips for visiting Capri
- Visit during shoulder season. Capri is busiest in July and August, with higher prices and even larger crowds. If you want a more relaxed and enjoyable experience with fewer tourists, I HIGHLY recommend visiting in May-June or September-October (like we did), as the weather is still warm, but popular attractions are not as busy.
- Get an early start. Many visitors come to Capri on day trips, meaning ferries unload large crowds mid-morning. To enjoy the island in peace, I recommend booking any tours to popular attractions, like the Blue Grotto and Monte Solaro, as early as possible. I also suggest staying overnight (if possible) to experience a much quieter and more magical Capri after the day-trippers leave.
- Book Blue Grotto tours wisely. As I’m sure you know, the Blue Grotto is undoubtedly the most famous attraction in Capri. However, if the sea is rough, it’s not always accessible. To increase your chances of getting inside, visit in the morning when the water is usually calmer. Arriving early, before the tour groups arrive, will also help to reduce wait times for a more enjoyable experience.
- Make any reservations well in advance. While many places accept walk-ins, I ALWAYS recommend making reservations ahead of time (regardless of what time of year you’re visiting) to avoid any issues and get the most out of your time in Capri. This includes reservations for hotels (obviously), transportation, restaurants, tours, and any attractions you’re interested in seeing.
- Use public transportation wisely. While public transportation is the most cost-effective way to get around, it can get crowded (especially during peak season) and is often unreliable, so proceed with caution. Looking back on our Amalfi Coast trip, I wish I had explored private transportation options. We experienced many ferry cancellations and long delays, making our trip extremely stressful at times.
What to do in Capri

Explore Anacapri
We weren’t originally planning on staying in Anacapri, but we had a last-minute itinerary change, and it ended up being one of my favorite places we visited on our entire trip to the Amalfi Coast. If you’re looking for a more relaxed and authentic experience in Capri without the crowds, I HIGHLY recommend staying in Anacapri Italy, instead of Capri Town.
Picture a charming village with whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and bursts of bougainvillea at every turn. Sounds pretty magical, right? Additionally, there are so many fun things to do in Anacapri with jaw-dropping views of the Mediterranean (might I add), like the Monte Solaro chairlift and Villa San Michele, which I’ll go into more detail below.
And when it comes to food, Anna Capri does not disappoint! Unlike the more high-end dining experiences you’ll find in Capri Town, the restaurants in Anacapri tend to be more laid-back (and mostly family-run), offering an authentic taste of Southern Italy with a slightly lower price tag. Expect to find homemade pasta, like ravioli capresi, and fresh seafood caught that very morning, and, of course, no meal is complete without having some of the island’s famous limoncello.
Tour Villa San Michele Capri
If you’re on the hunt for some of the best views in all of Capri, Villa San Michele in Anacapri is the place to go! Perched high on the slopes of Monte Solaro, this villa was once the home of a Swedish physician and author, Axel Munthe, and today, it houses a fascinating museum showcasing his personal collection of art, artifacts, and treasures from his life and global travels.
Additionally, as you stroll through the lush, Mediterranean-inspired gardens surrounding the villa, you’ll come across beautifully manicured paths leading to terraces and viewpoints of Capri, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Bay of Naples that are nothing short of extraordinary. I mean, do you see the photo below? Plus, there’s a cafe on-site offering coffee, lunch foods, dessert, and wine, making it the ultimate spot to enjoy a drink (or a snack) with a view!
If you’re interested in visiting, tickets range from 4-12 euros based on your age, and hours of operation may vary depending on the time of year you visit. Click here for more information.

Ride the Monte Solaro Chairlift
If you had to choose only one thing to do in Capri, let it be this! This single-seat chairlift takes you up to the highest point in Capri in just 12 minutes, treating you to breathtaking panoramic views along the way. The ascent is incredibly peaceful, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the experience and soak in the beauty of Capri from above.
Once you reach the 600-meter summit, you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping views on the island (I’m not lying) of the Faraglioni rock formations, the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea, and even distant sights like Mount Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast on a clear day. To make the experience even better, there’s also a cafe at the top, and I mean, who doesn’t want to enjoy a spritz with a view?
If you’re interested in riding the Anacapri chairlift, tickets are available for purchase only at the entrance to the chairlift station, priced at 14 euros per person. Children under eight are permitted to ride on an adult’s lap (as long as they can sit still), while older children are allowed to ride in their own seats. Keep in mind that the line for the Capri chair lift can get quite long, so it’s best to go early and, if possible, on a weekday to avoid crowds. Click here for more information.
Visit Faro di Punta Carena
If you’re looking for one of the best places to watch the sunset in Capri, Faro di Punta Carena should be at the top of your list! Tucked away on the island’s Southwestern tip, this striking lighthouse, built in the 19th century, is not only one of the tallest in Italy but also the oldest. And trust me, it’s every bit as iconic as it sounds!
While the lighthouse itself isn’t open to the public, you can still explore the surrounding area (or take in the views from afar). It’s especially breathtaking from a boat! Just steps away, you’ll also find Faro Beach, a beloved local hangout where you can swim in the clear blue water, lounge on the rocks, enjoy a spritz with a view, or watch a pretty epic sunset!
Sharing is caring! Pin it for later
Indulge in the local cuisine
Now, onto one of my favorite things to do while traveling (and let’s be honest, pretty much anywhere we go), eat and drink! Capri’s food scene is a true love letter to the Mediterranean, where fresh, local ingredients come together to create dishes that are light, flavorful, and utterly unforgettable. In other words, Capri isn’t just a feast for the eyes. It’s a treat for your taste buds, too!
Some signature dishes in Capri that you have to try are insalata caprese and ravioli capresi, a simple but insanely delicious combo of juicy tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fresh basil. Seafood lovers will also be in heaven, with plenty of options like scialatielli ai frutti di mare, pezzogna (a local fish served in a tomato broth), and l’impepata di cozze (a mussel dish). And, of course, no trip to Capri is complete without something lemony, from sorbetto al limone to a post-dinner taste of limoncello.
Some of our favorite Capri restaurants? Aumm Aumm Ristorante Pizzeria (try the ravioli capresi), Ristorante il Solitario (the spaghetti al limone is a dream), Casa Orlandi Ristorante e Pizzeria for Capri pizza, and Bar Ferraro for snacks and spritzes.
And yes, Da Paolino Capri, the iconic lemon tree restaurant, is also worth a mention, and with good reason! The setting is obviously undeniably dreamy, with lemons hanging overhead and that quintessential Capri charm. However, it’s also incredibly overrun with tourists, and the prices reflect that, so do what you want with that information (hehe).
Get lost in Capri Town
For the second half of our trip, we stayed in Capri Town and wowie! The vibe was completely different from Anacapri. Think of Capri Town as your stylish, high-energy friend who always shows up overdressed versus Ana Capri, your laid-back, artsy friend who lives for sunsets and sandals. Jokes aside, I highly recommend experiencing both. They’re each stunning in their own way and offer two very different sides of the island.
If you’re planning on spending some time in Capri Town, be sure to take a leisurely stroll Via Camerelle, the high-end shopping street lined with boutiques and perfectly manicured storefronts. It’s a window-shopping paradise! Don’t miss Giardini di Augusto for some of the most breathtaking views in Capri, as well as walking Via Krupp (if you’re up for the challenge). Capri Rooftop is also the perfect place to grab a drink with a view!
Soak up the sun at a Capri beach club
If you’re planning on visiting Capri during the warmer months, you absolutely need to experience a true Italian beach club! I mean, who doesn’t want a front-row seat to the stunning turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea?
Some of the most popular beach clubs in Capri include La Fontelina, Da Luigi ai Faraglioni, and Lido del Faro (near the Punta Carena lighthouse), but if you want to check out more options, I’ve got you covered right here.
During your visit, expect rows of chic sunbeds and striped umbrellas perched on rocky platforms (Capri doesn’t have many sandy beaches), crystal-clear swimming spots, and seaside restaurants serving fresh seafood and refreshing spritzes. It kind of sounds like a dream, right?
Many clubs also offer changing areas and towel service, and some even have boat access if you’re arriving from the water. Beach clubs are typically open from late spring through early fall, with peak season from June to September, so if you’re visiting during that window, I highly recommend booking your spot in advance!

Go on a Capri boat tour around the island
No trip to Capri is complete without a boat tour around the island and, of course, a visit to the legendary Blue Grotto (if you’re lucky)! Unfortunately, we did not make it into the Blue Grotto Capri, as it would have taken up our entire boat tour. However, we still had an incredible time cruising around the island, discovering hidden coves, and soaking in the stunning views.
If the Blue Grotto is at the top of your Capri itinerary, here are a few things to keep in mind. First, timing is everything! The Blue Grotto is only accessible when the sea is calm, and there aren’t any strong winds or high tides, which obviously makes it a bit tricky to plan for. Don’t be too disappointed if it doesn’t work out! The weather is unfortunately out of our hands. The good news? You can still experience “Gatorade water” in other parts of the island!
Second, if weather conditions are favorable, I HIGHLY recommend going either early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid crowds. However, even during off-peak times, wait times can be anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Plus, there is a separate entrance fee of 18 euros, as it can only be accessed by a small rowboat, so make sure to bring cash. Tickets can be purchased at the floating office near the entrance of the Blue Grotto Capri Italy.
If you’re interested in visiting the Capri Blue Grotto, the easiest way to get there is to book a boat tour with a stop at the Blue Grotto (browse options here). This way, you’ll get to see more of the island! However, there is also a queue for the rowboats that can be accessed near the Anacapri side of the island at the end of Via Grotta Azzurra. Click here for more information.
If you’re interested in a boat tour Capri WITH Blue Grotto access (weather pending), click here to check this one out!
Stroll Via Camerelle
If luxury shopping is your thing, Via Camerelle is the place to go! This iconic street is the crown jewel of high-end shopping on the island, with designer boutiques, chic cafes, and elegant storefronts around every corner. I’m not lying when I say it’s genuinely unlike anything I’ve ever seen!
As you wander down the polished stone walkway, you’ll pass by some of the world’s most coveted fashion houses, like Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton, all nestled in picturesque Capri-style buildings draped in vibrant bougainvillea. Even if you’re just window shopping (like I was, sadly, haha), it’s the perfect place to snap some photos and post up for some prime people-watching!

Wander through Giardini di Augusto
If you’re looking for another great spot for sweeping views of Capri’s rugged coastline, Giardini di Augusto is it! This meticulously maintained botanical oasis is filled with vibrant flowers, lush greenery, winding pathways, and, most importantly, spectacular panoramic views, including the famous Faraglioni rock formations.
Plus, the gardens overlook Via Krupp (which I’ll talk about further below), an iconic winding pathway carved into the cliffs. The entrance is literally right next door, making it an easy addition to your visit. If you’re interested in visiting the Gardens of Augustus, tickets are 2.50 euros per person and can be purchased in advance here.
Get your steps in on Via Krupp
If you’re interested in burning off all the pasta you definitely don’t regret eating (same), Via Krupp is the spot to do it! Via Krupp is essentially a winding stone path built into the side of the cliff, offering stunning views of the sparkling water and Faraglioni rocks along the way! In other words, it’s essentially a scenic Stairmaster connecting Giardini di Augusto to Marina Piccolo below.
Don’t let the view from the top fool you, though! I promise the walk down isn’t nearly as intimidating as it looks. (The walk back up is another story, hehe.) Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with turquoise blue water and a beach club across the street, perfect for cooling off, soaking up the sun, and sipping a well-earned spritz with a view. Trust me, the trek is worth it, and your Instagram feed will thank you, too!
Grab a drink with a view at Capri Rooftop
If you’re looking for the ULTIMATE spot to grab a drink with a view, Capri Rooftop is it! Perched above the iconic Piazetta, this dreamy Capri restaurant offers sweeping views of the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea and the legendary Faraglioni rocks. Plus, it’s only a few minutes walk from Giardini di Augusto and Via Krupp, making it a convenient stop on your way back to the Piazzetta.
If you’re interested in visiting, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance here (especially if you’re traveling during peak season), as this spot is no secret. Whether you’re stopping by for a light lunch, a mid-afternoon espresso, or a cocktail during sunset, Capri Rooftop delivers a one-of-a-kind rooftop experience you won’t find anywhere else. Trust me!
